The Elijah Memorial Skills Acquisition Center is for young women between the ages of 12 - 20. The need for the Center was birthed when the relization that ordinary secondary education was not enough to prepare them for careers in the real world. The high rate of unemployment in Nigeria has led to an increase in teen pregnancy, and complications during childbirth.
Poor, uneducated girls are vulnerable in most African societies. Most girls only attend elementary school and end up working as domestics or labourers. Often these young women are abused and married unhappily to men with multiple wives. However, young women who can type, make dresses, or run a small business can escape this destiny. The Skills Center was established in 1987 to provide secondary, technical and life skills education to underprivileged teenage girls to give them vocational opportunities, to build their capacity and independence.
In our center, young ladies are trained in various vocational skills, and are taught how to make a decent living in a corrupt society. The training program has been upgraded in order for these young women to qualify for admission into Polytechnics and Universities.
